Sheens
Each finish option comes in a variety of sheens. Each sheen, Semi-gloss, Satin or Matte, has a different level of shine, which will impact the appearance of the floor.
Generally speaking, the less sheen, the less you will notice small scratches and other wear that is normal with wood floors. All sheens will offer the same protection for your floor, so it truly is a matter of which look you like best.
Water vs Oil Based Finish
Surface finishes are durable, water-resistant, and require minimal maintenance.They remain on the surface of the wood to form a protective coating. There are different types of finishes available:
Water-based finishes are clear and will resist turning yellow over time. These finishes are thinner but stronger and are less susceptible to surface scratches. They are very durable and have low VOC's.
Oil-based finishes give an amber color to hardwood floors and will continue to darken over time. They are a thicker finish but softer.
Dark Stains
Dark stains are difficult to get right. Often times, if the correct staining techniques are not used, you can end up with a blochy, uneven floor.
There is a trick to getting dark stains to look good. We have years of experience and can confidently provide beautiful results using dark stains on most types of flooring.
